DVD Review: Role Models

I recently saw on DVD for the 2nd time "Role Models". Let me start off by saying this movie may be one of the funniest/clever films to have come out since "40 year old virgin". The basic premise of the movie revolves around two men Danny and Wheeler (Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott) , who are forced to be friends because of their work, have to log 150 hours of community service or face going to jail. They do this community service by joining a mentor (big brother) program. Yes! The man, myth and legend Mclovin (Christopher-mintz Plasse) from the 2007 summer hit "Superbad" also stars in this film.

He plays a character named Augie Farks who is basically just a giant socially ackward geek who is obsessed with A "Dungeons and Dragons" type of game called Laire it looks like a live action version of the Middle Ages and looks awesome. The relationship between Danny (Rudd) and Augie (Plasse) starts off as rough, neither one really caring about each other, slowly turns into what one would expect from a real big-brother. Augie and Danny both have in common the fact that their life seems to not be great.

This film has to also be a big boost in the career of another cult character, Stifler from "American Pie." After a long Hiatus from being at the top of the comedy field, Sean William Scott proves that he is still as funny as his late 1990's character was remembered for. Scott's character Wheeler, mentors the guy who may have stole the show Ronnie, played by a young Bobbe J. Thompson. This kid, brings his own unique comedy voice to the film that will leave you on the verge of tears from laughter. His character and Wheeler (Scott) have more of a funny relationshp. he goes around uses curse words in every sentence and tries to hit on women that are most likely twenty years older then him. I don't really want to give it all away but, you will see what I mean when you watch the film.

After about six hours of googling (5 min.) I discovered on wikipedia that althoug their isn't something called Laire, there is something similar to it called Live Action Role Playing (LARP.) It looks very similar and fun to what the characters in this film played.

  2. Definitely have to check this one out. With movies like this, it usually turns out that they're either hilarious, or all the good parts were in the commercial. Sounds like this was a good one though.
