Watchmen?

It is the beginning of April and spring is in the air. Only a few weeks ago, we were seeing advertisements on T.V. left and right for the film "Watchmen". As many people know, studios have been trying to make this film for years. There have been many different scripts written and studio wars over this film. But suddenly all the talk seemed to have vanished as the film never lived up to expectations. The movie quickly faded from the top of the box office towards the bottom. According to boxofficemojo.com the film has earned about 176 million dollars in the world. It seems like pennies compared to the summer blockbuster "The Dark Knight". I bet that there are people down at Warner Bros. shaking their heads wondering what happened?

The problem with a film like "Watchmen" is not the film itself but the people who are being targeted. What I mean, the film was based off a complex graphic novel that was once a 12 issue comic book. This is not a film where you can bring your little children too with the hope that it will turn out to be something similar to "Spiderman." Also, maybe the film could have benefited from a summer release date.

In the last 8 or 9 years, superhero films have done very well in the box office. However, Sometimes promotion does not mean an automatic hit. Other times, promotion will create a "hit." Take Will Smith summer blockbuster "Hancock", that film did very well for a movie that had no basic following like a comic book or TV series. Had it been "R" I seriously doubt it would have had the same success that it did. The bottom line, "Watchmen" set its standards really high hoping to achieve the success that "The Dark Knight" had. We really can't compare these two films because one is targeted for teenagers the other one is an adult film.

I believe since the film was such a complex story. It could have been done better by breaking the story up into sections similar to "Lord of The Rings." From a studio perspective they would have made more money making three parts of a two hour film. Compared to one, almost three hour movie. but then again, maybe "Watchmen" was just something that was never meant to be turned into a film like The Catcher In The Rye.

According to various magazines, the director Zack Snyder has announced the strong possibility for the Director cut of the film to be in limited release over the summer. It should be interesting how the die-hard "Watchmen" fans view the director cut which would most likely be over three hours long.
