Normally films that are re-makes give off a different type of vibe. There are a lot less excitement for these type of films because people feel like it has "been done before." Obviously films like "The Dark Knight" are an exception to this rule. I want to place this film, "The Taking of Pelham 123" in that category also. Judging by the first two trailers that have been released on youtube I can say that this film looks like it will shape up to be an awesome early summer film. It also looks like a different film then both the 1974 and the 1998 re-makes.
Everything about it seems to be in the right direction. It has a great director, Tony Scott, and great stars that include Denzel Washington and John Travolta. It will be interesting to see John Travolta as the "bad guy" in this film. I think he will do a fine job because he has grown to become a more mature actor then he once was. I do feel that this film will have the burden of being compared to the other Denzel films in the past.
If you think about it, there is a similarity between the character he plays in this film and the one in "Inside man." In "Inside Man" he plays a Hostage negotiator that was brought into action after a bank robbery, that resulted in a hostage situation. In "The Taking of Pelham 123" again there is a hostage situation where it appears that Denzel character is the one trying to fight for the peoples freedom, only this time he doesn't play a cop but a subway dispatcher.
Also to note, James Gandolfini plays the mayor of the town. James was famously known as "Tony Soprano" in the show "Sopranos". He didn't have a lot of lines in the trailer so it is hard to predict his performance. The Release date is very early in the summer, June 12th.
